SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENT TRANSPORTATION
Every student’s needs, on every trip
Students with an IEP need to be able to rely on their ride, every day. With RouteMill each student’s needs travel with them, route optimization respects every requirement, and the driver sees them at every stop.
Student requirements
Needs that travel with the student
You record each student’s needs once and they follow the student onto every trip. Only vehicles that can carry the student are used, and the right details reach the driver without anyone having to remember them.
- Wheelchairs, safety vests, car seats, ramps and lifts
- The same driver or a fixed seat in the vehicle
- Ride-time limits, fixed routes and times
Bus aides
Bus aides planned with the student
Many students ride with a bus aide. RouteMill books the aide with the student and plans the aide’s own stops into the route, so the trip works for both.
- A bus aide with their own pickup and drop-off address
- Door-to-door service into school when it is needed
- Both on board when they need to be
Route optimization
Smooth routes without breaking a requirement
Every route is optimized automatically for shorter distances and fewer stops, while equipment, ride-time limits and who can ride with whom are kept on every trip.
- Less time spent planning
- Shorter rides for students
- Fewer vehicles and miles

- Pickups and drop-offs confirmed in the app
- Turn-by-turn guidance along the route

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Special needs student transportation, answered
What needs can be recorded for a student?
Anything that matters on the trip: a wheelchair position, a safety vest or car seat, a ramp or lift, a bus aide, a driver the student knows, a fixed seat, door-to-door service into school, ride-time limits and who the student may or may not ride with.
How do bus aides work?
A bus aide is booked with the student and has their own pickup and drop-off address. Route optimization plans the aide’s stops together with the student’s, so both are on board when they need to be.
Does route optimization respect every requirement?
Yes. Only vehicles with the right equipment and capacity are used, ride-time limits and time windows are kept, and students who must not ride together are kept apart. You see the result before you commit.
Can we plan special needs and general education routes together?
Yes. Both run in the same operation and the same dispatch view, so vehicles and drivers can be shared where the requirements allow it.
